Gimbal & Direct-Drive Motors

Size by rated torque at your bus voltage, decide whether you want the driver built in, then check the shaft and encoder.

How to compare gimbal & direct-drive motors
Rated torque
What the motor delivers continuously. Gimbal motors are sized to hold and move a balanced load smoothly, not to lift.
Peak torque
What it delivers briefly before heat limits it.
KV
Unloaded speed per volt. Gimbal motors have low KV, for torque at low speed.
Encoder
A magnetic encoder on the shaft reads its angle for closed-loop control. AS5600 is 12-bit; AS5048A is 14-bit.
Direct-drive servo
A motor with no gearbox and its driver and encoder in the housing: no backlash, smooth and quiet, with less torque than a geared joint of the same size.
Wheel motor
A direct-drive motor built into the wheel, here with its own driver on a CAN FD bus.
