Choosing the right one

  • One motor is offered in many gear ratios: pick the ratio that gives your output speed, then check the rated torque at that ratio.
  • Rated torque is what the motor gives continuously; stall torque is the most before it stops and must not be used for running.
  • Worm gearboxes self-lock and turn the output 90°; spur and planetary gearboxes are more efficient and back-drivable.
  • Add an encoder for speed or position feedback, and a speed controller for PWM speed control.
